Overview The required written work for the course consists of three open research memoranda. Each memorandum will be based on a written problem distributed in class. There will be an opportunity to discuss the problem and ask questions about it after it is distributed. Each problem will be based on the readings and classroom discussions, but the problems are designed so that students will be expected to do some independent research beyond the scope of the readings themselves. These are open problems; there are no limits on the resources that students may bring to bear on their work.
Format Memoranda must be typed or printed using a computer. Each memorandum, including any attachments (such as draft policies requested in the Assignment) must be not longer than five [5] typewritten or printed pages, double-spaced, with 1" minimum margins on all sides. No footnotes are permitted. Twelve [12] point proportional-width font (such as Times New Roman) must be used.
Grading Memoranda will be graded based on form, format, and writing quality as well as on content. The problems are designed so as not to have any single correct or even best solution; each problem will present a range of issues that the memorandum should identify, analyze, and solve in a creative way.
Due dates One hard copy of the work product prepared for Assignment Three must be delivered to the Registrar's Office not later than Friday, April 26, at 5 p.m. Electronic (e-mailed) copies are not acceptable. There were be no extensions or exceptions to this deadline. Memoranda that do not conform to the format instructions above, or that are turned in late, are subject to grade reductions.
If you would like your Memorandum returned to you after grading is complete, please turn in, with your Memorandum, a stamped, addressed envelope that is large enough to accommodate the Memorandum.
