Course Description

Fall.  3 credits.

    This course will examine the relationship between the American family and the law. Topics will include the legal definitions of marriage and family; the rights and obligations among family members; the government’s role in marriage and family life, as well as constitutional limitations on governmental intrusion; dissolution of marriage and the related issues of equitable distribution of marital assets, alimony, child custody and child support; and jurisdiction and choice of law complications. The grade will be based on a 48-hour take-home exam to be completed during the first five days of the exam period.
